Welcome
Beaufort Art Association (BAA) was first organized on February 2, 1957, and chartered later that year. The first exhibits were hung on the outside of a building on the corner of Bay Street where the clock now stands. BAA is a non-profit organization with 5(01((c3) tax exempt status funded by membership dues, private donations, and corporate sponsorship. The organization's mission is to “encourage support and provide opportunities for the growth of all members, as well as to contribute to the community with aesthetic and educational experiences in the visual arts.” BAA offers classes and workshops, as well as venues for artists to exhibit and sell a variety of artwork to include paintings, jewelry, photography, pottery, sculpture, woodworking, fiber art, and opportunities for fellowship and support by other artists. The current gallery is located at 913 Bay Street in historic Beaufort, SC.
Today BAA stands as a vibrant organization with a robust community of over 150 members, approximately 65 artists exhibiting in the gallery. At the heart of its activities are featured artists exhibits that showcase the diverse talents of our membership. These exhibits are celebrated with an opening reception on the first Friday every other month beginning in January. Beyond these, BAA hosts an annual Spring Show in March, a festive Holiday Market in December, and an array of events throughout the year. BAA's goal is multifaceted, aiming to provide Beaufort County artists with a dedicated space to exhibit their work, foster artistic education through classes, and actively contribute to the community. By organizing art events and extending support to local schools with art classes and supplies, the Beaufort Art Association is a driving force in nurturing creativity and enriching the cultural fabric of the region.
Our gallery is located within walking distance to a number of artistic, cultural, and historic sites. These include the Pat Conroy Literacy Center, sites of filming of 15 or more national movies (including Forrest Gump and The Big Chill), the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, the John Mark Verdier house museum, the Beaufort City Marina, the Reconstruction Era National Park, the Arsenal (a military museum and home of the city visitor center). Several Bed and Breakfast establishments are located in historic antebellum homes nearby. The city also hosts an Oyster Festival in January, a ten day Water Festival in July, and a Shrimp Festival in October.
