Nearly every culture since pre-Neolithic times has made and worn necklaces, starting with simple shells and bones. Today’s combination is infinitely more exotic and can be varied indeed.

Susan Palmer, aka “The Bead Lady” began creating necklaces almost 30 years ago in Lima, Peru. Initially she worked with antique buttons and watch fobs taken from her late mother’s collection. Later she mixed in an eclectic assortment of Peruvian pre-colonial as well as antique exotic pieces collected from around the world. Many of her individual beads and pieces have been appraised by the Smithsonian Museum.

Susan’s unfettered imagination and her eye for color and balance has made her work alluring and unique. Each of her one-of-a-kind pieces has its own collection story and history.

She has a loyal following and has been featured in U.S. as well as foreign publications. She also redesigns existing necklaces and accepts individual customer requests.

The U.S. Diplomatic Corps took her and her family to several countries throughout the Americas over a span of 35 years. Susan and her husband have lived in Beaufort for over ten years.
