Penny received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Art Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and for twenty-five years was an art teacher in the Quaker Valley Schools in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. During this period she also participated in art workshops with Herb Olds of Carnegie-Mellon University and postgraduate art studies with Adrian Van Suchtelen at Utah State University.
Her continuing interest in enriching her students with ideas and skills earned her an award in the 1980s from the Pennsylvania Art Education Association as ‘Outstanding Art Educator.’ While in Sewickley, Penny was associated with Bird in the Hand Gallery where she had several one-woman shows. She participated in many group shows and invitationals over the years including Outstanding Art Alumni of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Regional Triennials of Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art, Loretto PA, and Pennsylvania Artist Educator at William Penn Memorial Museum, Harrisburg PA, and University Museum of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where her work is in the permanent collection.
